Shohin Field Elm

I´m quite happy with this little tree. I should completely wire it to get branches more natural.
Branch structure is getting better and the overal look of the tree is fine. Scar after the cut is healing nicely. I love this pot made by austrian potter Herbert Lober (habati).

Elm air layering - Potápanie brestu

This little elm was dug out in september 2011 in local woods. Nothing special, except nice old rough bark on it. Unfortunatelly the root system was very poor with bad surface roots, so I decided to air layer  it. The trunk was a little bit wider on the upper part as on the base. When I cut the trunk, I counted 25 growing seasons on wood. 

I started air layer on jun 2012 and after two month I saw first roots coming out from the fence. I used coconut fibres as a substrate, with crashed bricks and a little amount of zeolith. I let it grow freely this season to encourage new roots. Hope it will survive our hard winter. I´m planning to do a shohin in informal upright, or broom form.

 Tento malý brest som vykopal začiatkom jesene v roku 2011. Nie je ničím výnimočný, zaujamala ma iba hrubo popraskaná kôra. Nanešťastie koreňový systém vrátane koreňových nábehov bol veľmi slabý, tak som sa rozhodol na potápanie. Kmeň mal nepríjemnú optickú vadu - smerom hore od koreňov sa rozširoval. Na odrezanom kmeni som napočítal 25 letokruhov. Zárez na kmeni som urobil v najrozšírenejšom mieste pomerne neskoro v júni. Prvé korene začali vyliezať zo sieťky o dva mesiace.     Ako zakoreňovací substrát som použil kokosové vlákna - lignocel - drvenú tehlu s malým množstvom zeolitu. Túto sezónu nechávam zelenú hmotu volne rásť, aby sa posilnila tvorba nových koreňov. Dúfam že nové korene prežijú našu zimu. Z tohto kúsku plánujem urobiť malý šohin vo volne vzpriamenom štýle, prípadne metlu.
